Elmo Cupcakes

While out in Ohio last week, I got to make my nephew's birthday cake.  Last year he was too little to have a favorite, so we went with a typical boy sports theme.
A year later and he's definitely got a favorite, and it's this guy:
Personally, I was a huge Ernie fan as a kid, but I do think Elmo is pretty cute also, he wasn't around when I was a kid!!!!  Originally I was going to use the football pan from last year, but it mysteriously disappeared so I went with plan b, Elmo Cupcakes!
I really don't like red frosting so I tinted the frosting and then covered each cupcake in red decorating sugars.  The eyes are coconut jelly beans cut in half with a dot of melted chocolate that squeezed out of a zip lock bag with the corner snipped off.  Elmo's nose is an orange jelly bean.  Realized the night before making these, I could go to a candy store and only buy the amount of each color of jelly bean that I needed instead of having to buy a large bag of mixed and hope there was enough of what I needed!  I might be the last person to know that, but if not, that's my tip of the day, lol!!!

For his big-ol grin, we split your basic "sandwich cookies" scraped out the creme filling and cut them in half.  Slow sawing resulted in less breakage of the cookies.  I did need a bit more icing on the back of each cookie to "glue" them in place.
Tatertot mush have overheard the discussion of the cupcakes because he woke up from his nap (I decorated while he napped) asking for Elmo Cake.  He was so incredibly thrilled when he got his own Elmo cupcake.
This was only the first day with is cousins.  By the end of the week, the poor babe was so over tired from not wanting to miss a minute of his time with them, especially O-man!

Peace be with you,

If You Give Me A Blank Canvas...

O-man's good friend turned 4 a few weeks ago and for his birthday, his mom asked me to do a mural on his wall.  Well this boy loves gears, of all kinds.  Things that connect together and move around are his favorite.  So I took several of his gears and connected them in a layout I thought would look good in the space and a bunch of plastic lids and other various circular objects and got to work.

I started by tracing the lids and getting a basic plan for my design.  Since I always have a huge container or acrylic paint on hand, we picked out some colors and I started painting.
The boys played downstairs.  I got such a kick out of them checking on my progress... they weren't quite sure that I was actually making gears on his wall in the beginning stages.
I got such a kick out of doing this since my mom is an artist.  She does amazing watercolors, and it amused me to pretend I was as talented as her!
Hmmm, not quite there...
End of day one, they were pretty excited, it looked more like gears finally!

Here's the final result.  A few more layers of paint and outlining in black really brought it together.

Peace be with you,

I'll be linking up to some of these parties, stop by and check out the talent!

Flash Back Friday - Pizza Party

Sorry for the late edition, my Internet has been a bit spotty.  As I write this I have 5 little girls watching a movie in their pajamas tucked into sleeping bags.  This is the year sleep overs have officially started in our house!  It has actually made it easy to make the birthday party low key (yes, JuneBug's birthday was 2 months ago... it took this long to organize a night when all her main buddies could be here).
I try to alternate years between big parties and low key parties.  It helps reduce trying to out do the last party with a bigger and better one.  My girls can then focus in on who their best buds are and really think about who they are closest to.

A Pizza Party Birthday

While I've done stamped and other types of custom cards in the past, a favorite of my crew is to make photo card invites.  JuneBug had fun dressing up for the picture and we made up a poem together and ordered them online.  Since we'd decided on a pizza theme, she wore a chef's hat and apron and held a bowl and spoon in front of our red kitchen wall (pizza theme just screams red to me... tomato sauce maybe?).
On the day of the party, as the girls arrived they each got a canvas apron to decorate with permanent markers (if I ever do this again, I will probably make the aprons, the only plain canvas ones I found were so cheaply made I sewed half of them back together before the party even started!).  This worked great because their was room to spread out the aprons with only a few girls at a time.  Mainly they all signed each others and drew little doodles in between.  They were all thrilled with it!  We also had chef hats for them to wear.
A pizza party requires pizza!  Each guest go a personal sized pizza crust to top however they wanted.  Obviously sauce and cheese were a part of the spread but we also had pepperoni, ham, onions, green peppers, pineapple and grilled chicken.  I was surprised how many kids divided their pizza up and tried different combinations, especially after their uncertainty as to the choices!

A few years back I stopped trying to organize too many party games since the kids seem to just want to play together, so we sent them all down the basement to play while the pizzas baked.  Note to self: there needs to be a plan or system for remembering which child made which pizza...
We got it figured out eventually!

Instead of a cake we made pizza cookies, yumm-o.  What's a pizza cookie?  I thought you'd never ask!

I made large sugar cookies, topped with pink frosting (too much red food coloring makes it taste funny and JuneBug likes pink, go with it).  Topping time!  For the real pizzas I made little signs on Popsicle sticks to label everything.  At first I had great ideas of all types of candies to look like the real toppings but came down to m&ms... why, well, do you know a kid who doesn't like m&ms?  I didn't think so.  We sorted the m&ms by color and then used the same type of signs.  The part of cheese was played by coconut.
Green - green peppers
yellow - onions or pineapple
red - pepperoni
brown - sausage
orange - ham
blue - I don't remember what the blue ones were... if they still had the old original colors with the two shades of brown it probably would have been easier.  I did consider getting the bags of individual colors but didn't think the cost difference was worth it.  The blue ones were gone first since they all thought it was funny to have blue food on their pizzas (again, go with it).
When it was time to leave, I took a picture with JuneBug and each of her friends individually wearing their aprons and chef hats.  JuneBug wrote out a simple thank you to each of her friends and I had single cards made out of each picture with the personalized thank you typed on each picture.
It's been a few hours since I started typing this post... the sleepover is officially a success... they are all sleeping!

Peace be with you,

PS - I'll be linking up to several of these parties!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Well, 30+ years ago I made this woman:
a MOM!!!! (click on her and you can go see how talented my mommy is!)

Yup, it's my birthday!!!!!  Not that I feel any different than I did yesterday.  But, I've decided to give you guys the presents!  What can you win, some of my favorite things of course;
Avon Complete Look makeup pallet (all in one makes it so much easier to actually put makeup on in the morning), Super Shock Mascara (if I can only have one makeup item, it's got to be mascara), Scrappy Flower Clip (soon to be in my etsy shop) and a rose quartz and hematite necklace made by me!

How do you win?  Well, it's pretty easy and only requires two things:
  1. You MUST be a follower (GFC) of Domestic Deadline
  2. Leave me a comment on this post telling me what project on Domestic Deadline that is your favorite!
Deadline to enter is Friday May 13th (just because it is Friday the 13th) by 11:59pm EST.

Peace be with you,

Birthday Bash

We are mostly packed and headed back to the garden state tomorrow after a fun weekend with family and friends.  By getting here a bit earlier than originally planned I was able to make my nephew's birthday cakes and walk my SisterBaby through making a set on her own for Tatertot's second party.  I didn't get pictures of her cakes, hopefully she'll email me one and I can show you a picture of how nice they turned out.  Here is how mine turned out, obviously we went for a sports theme (SisterBaby was given a football shaped pan and just had to use it)!
Tatertot has been deprived of sugar his whole life, he was quite thrilled with sticking his hands into the frosting and licking it off his fingers!
SisterBaby wanted "Healthy" cakes!  My chocolate fudge cake uses pumpkin so we made one of those and I made up a new recipe a bit on the fly which turned out awesome!  I made a yellow cake with pumpkin and pineapple, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be making this one again.  Not really healthy since there is plenty of white flour and sugar in it, but eat enough of it and I think you'd get a whole serving of fruits and veggies!

Pineapple Cake:
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup crushed pineapple
1 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix)
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp vanilla or almond extract (or a combo)
2 eggs

Blend well and bake according to the box.  Here's a tip, if you are making a cake in a deep pan or bowl, bake at 325 instead of the standard 350.  It will definitely take longer but this reduces the risk of the cake ending up over cooked on the outside and still runny on the inside.  Our baseball took over an hour this way but I've done enough to know this was the best way to bake it.

Decorate with homemade chocolate icing and a little green coconut grass!  Let me know if you are interested in that recipe, I'll gladly share.
Update:  Here are SisterBaby's versions.  She did an awesome job too, much better than my first child's first birthday cake!
Peace be with you,

Sleeping Beauties

Tasha turned 7 last month and we were finally able to have her party this past weekend.  I gave her a few options but she kept asking for a sleep over.  When first asked who she'd invite she immediately said. "My best friend in Mrs. B's class that I play with everyday at recess!"  Conversation continued like this:
  • Me, "Oh, what's her name?"
  • T, "I don't know, but she's my best friend!"
  • Me, "Then why don't you know her name?"
  • T, "I never asked!"
Got to love how kids don't need to know names to play together.  We did finally decide she could have 3 friends (even numbers work best, I find) but I had to know their parents.  At first she was dissapointed, but then she quickly told me her "other" three best friends, all of whom I'm friends with their moms.  No surprise these are three of the girls she wants to get together with most outside of school.

We kept the party very low key, one of the girls had never slept over at a friend's before.  I often find when I plan all sorts of games and activities, they just want to play and are happy to entertain themselves.  I did however need to make a cake to fit the "Slumber Party" theme...

As usual, I didn't budget my time as well as I should have so I simplified my design, but I also simplified it due to not wanting to buy all kinds of things for the decorating that I only need a few of each (also known as the dinero factor).

Tasha was quite surprised, she had no idea what I was planning:
Four little girls in their sleeping bags!  I used 'Nilla Wafers for the faces, mini M&Ms for eyes, jelly beans for the shoes, cut jumbo marshmallows for the pillows and bodies and everything else was done with fruit roll-ups.  Here are the four girls in their jammies, in the order that they (think) they are on the cake.  I had no specific girl in mind, but they each thought one was them!
I'm pretty sure they all had a great time.  Of course, mine was the last one asleep and a bit grumpy the next day...

Peace be with you,
